The Greenway Challenge will consist of trail running, cycling (mountain or cyclocross bikes), paddling, obstacle courses and mystery events. Individuals, relays, 2 and 3 person teams will be allowed. All teams will be required to stay together during all events unless otherwise directed. All competitors will be required to have an annual USA Triathlon License or purchase a 1 day for $10.00. (Every team member will be required to have a USAT License.)
Most proceeds from the race will go to benefit the work of the North Chickamauga Creek Conservancy. The race name relates to the challenge of completing the Greenway corridor along North Chickamauga Creek, one of the main goals of the organization. The objective is to link the North Chickamauga Creek Greenway Farm, situated along the last three miles of the creek as it flows into the Tennessee River, to the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge, including the 3,700 acre North Chickamauga Gorge State Natural Area, along a contiguous green corridor. To date, more than 10,000 acres have been conserved. The Greenway, when completed, will link up with the Tennessee RiverPark, providing an unobstructed pedestrian pathway from downtown Chattanooga to the North Chickamauga Creek Gorge. The Greenway will also be connected to the Cumberland Trail, Tennessee’s first linear state park, providing virtually unlimited opportunities for recreational activities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a list of frequently asked questions regarding the North Chick Greenway Challenge Adventure Race. Of course you can email us with any other questions you may have. Who knows, it might make it to the FAQ list.
Q: What are the "obstacles" and "challenges"?
A: Well, we can't reveal too much about them or else it wouldn't be much fun, now would it? To calm your fears, as well as our insurance company's, the obstacles and challenges will not involve anything too dangerous or overly difficult. However, you will be tested both physically and mentally, so be ready for anything.
Q: Are there hotels close to the race course?
A: There is a Hampton Inn, a Comfort Inn and a Holiday Inn Express within five minutes of the Greenway Farm. Of course, there are tons of other hotels in the Greater Chattanooga area. Downtown Chattanooga is approximately twenty minutes from the race start. You could even stay in railroad cars at the famous Chattanooga Choo Choo. If you want to rough it there is a campground just 5 minutes from the race site at Chester Frost Park.
Q: Can I rent a boat somewhere?
A: Note that racers can paddle any non-motorized boat they can get their hands on. The paddling section will be in a creek with some downed trees and other obstructions to maneuver around, so plan your boat choice appropriately. This is not meant to intimidate anyone, just to let you know that your boat should be maneuverable. This is NOT a technical paddling section and beginners should have no problem with it; however, it's always a good idea to get out there and practice before the race. Racers must provide their own boat, paddle and pfd for the race. A limited number of canoes will be available on a FCFS basis. (Sign up early to ensure you get one.)
Q: Can we leave items at the Transition Area (TA) during the race?
A: Absolutely. There should be ample room in your designated space for any gear, food and drinks that you wish to leave. Note that racers and racers alone will be allowed to enter the transition areas before, during and after the race since no outside assistance is permitted and we want to make sure that your gear is not stolen.
Q: Do I need anything else for the bike leg?
A: All you need for the bike leg is a bike and a helmet. However, it would probably be a good idea to bring items needed to fix a flat and maybe do some minor bike repairs. A spare tube, pump or other inflation device and tire irons are suggested. More advanced tools may be a good idea but the bike leg(s) are mostly on non-technical trails so I'll let you decide.
Q: Can we run the course before the race?
A: Of course. In fact, we encourage it and hold weekly training sessions on the course as the race approaches (contact Ken Radley for details). The Greenway Farm is a public park open from sunrise to sunset. All the trails on the run course are open to the public although some of the trails do not allow cycling. The boat ramps are also accessible during these hours.
Q: Is there an age requirement?
A: Yes. You have to be at least 13 years old on the day of the race.
Q: Why is the race USAT Sanctioned this year?
A: In years past almost all racers raced on a 1 day permit, since many of our racers are USA Triathlon members we believe this will save on your cost to participate. You will be able to purchase a 1 day or annual USAT License at registration.
Q: Can I get a copy of the USAT rules?
A: Click here for USAT Rules
